Most people wouldn't recognize coffee in it's natural state. Most coffee plants
are grown far away from the end user in places like Costa Rica and Africa. So to
think that coffee is actually grown on a bush and comes from a berry is strange.
Facts About the Coffee Bush
On average a mature coffee bush will produce a pound of roasted coffee beans per
year. Coffee plants reach maturity five years after they sprout their first leaf.
They produce a red fruit called a coffee berry.
The two most commonly cultivated varieties of coffee plants are the Arabica and
Robusta. Coffee berries will usually contain two coffee beans. If the berry only
contains one bean it is called a peaberry. It is usually considered a sign of good
luck if the berry has three beans in it.
Coffee berries are harvested by hand. The beans have to be processed after harvesting
before they can be made into a great drink. The most prolific and largest coffee
plantations are found near the Equator. Hawaii and Puerto Rico are the only places
in the United States that have commercial size plantations.
